Space Shuttle Discovery

Space Shuttle Discovery just landed with a mighty SONIC BOOM! at Edwards Air Force Base. I got to watch the live feed from Spaceflight Now, a truly awesome sight to behold. After the touchdown, it occurred to me, that since the shuttle isn't capable of it's own atmospheric takeoff and landing, that they have to somehow ferry it from California to Florida to bring it back to Kennedy Space Center. I asked in a Fark.com thread, and this was the answer I got:
